Seattle Symphony Orchestra
USA (Seattle)
18 Sep 2008 - 27 Jun 2009
At home in Benaroya Hall, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra has become one of the fastest rising in the classical music firmament. Maestro, Gerard Schwarz, has been music director since 1985.
The Seattle Symphony Orchestra has brought the best of classical music to the north-west Pacific coast for over a century, tracing its history back to 29 December 1903, when a 24-man orchestra under violinist Harry F West played works by Massenet, Bruch, Schubert and Rossini. The culmination of all this activity was the opening in September 1998 of the orchestra's new hall in downtown Seattle - the Benaroya Hall.
Since 1983 Gerard Schwarz has been associated with the orchestra, first as Music Advisor, then as Principal Conductor and - since 1985 - as Music Director. He helped increase the orchestra's profile worldwide, with their acclaimed recordings of American repertoire, particularly the symphonies of Howard Hanson and David Diamond.
The 2008/2009 season includes Schwarz conducting a typically eclectic programme. The Seattle Symphony website gives the full programme details.
